HC Deb 05 May 1927 vol 205 cc1742-3
18. Mr. EVERARD

asked the Minister of Health whether he has received any notification by the council of the city of Leicester of their intention to open a home for mentally defective children in the parish of Birstall; and whether, seeing that this is a rapidly developing residential district, he will see that the home is situated in some less populated part of the county?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I understand that the Leicester Mental Deficiency Committee are considering taking a house at Birstall for a short term for a small number of children pending the extension of their main institution, but the proposal has not yet been officially submitted.

Mr. R. MORRISON

Will the right hon. Gentleman see that, rather than offend the susceptibilities of the people in this aristocratic neighbourhood, children shall be exterminated rather than give any offence?

Mr. EVERARD

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that this is not an aristocratic neighbourhood, but one where the majority of the residents belong to the working classes?
