HC Deb 05 May 1927 vol 205 cc1756-7
37. Mr. JOHNSTON

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether any Law Officer of the Crown received fees or other emoluments arising out of the illegal deportations to Ireland in 1923; and, if so, what were the amounts and to whom paid?

Mr. McNEILL

Yes, Sir. The sum of £521 19s. 6d. was paid to the Attorney-General, and £127 6s. to the Solicitor-General.

Mr. JOHNSTON

Can the right hon. Gentleman say who got the balance of the £9,000 referred to in the White Paper?

Mr. McNEILL

I cannot say that offhand, but if my hon. Friend will put down a question I will try to get the information.

Captain GARRO-JONES

If the principle were established of not paying for bad advice from the Crown, would not the nation save all the salaries of right hon. Gentlemen?
