HC Deb 02 May 1927 vol 205 cc1250-1
5. Mr. GARDNER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether, in connection with the incident at Kulkati when 37 rounds of ammunition were fired into a Moslem crowd on the order of the district Magistrate, the Government of India have received any representations from Moslem or other organisations urging the immediate transfer of the district Magistrate in the interest of a fair and impartial inquiry into the circumstances of the firing; and what steps the Government propose to take in this matter?

Earl WINTERTON

I am aware that the district Magistrate has been hotly attacked in the Press and elsewhere, and think it probable that these attacks have included demands for his transfer. I have no reason to think that it is intended to transfer him, and even if there were such an intention, it would not be for the reason implied in the hon. Member's question.
