§ 65. Sir FRANK NELSONasked the Postmaster-General what facilities exist in England, Scotland and Wales for despatching telegrams or cables after 10.30 a.m. on bank holidays?
§ Viscount WOLMERThere are about 30 provincial towns in which the head post offices are open always for telegraph work, and about 20 more in which they open for longer or shorter periods after 10.30 a.m. on bank holidays. Any telephone subscriber can at any time dictate a telegram (inland or foreign) to the nearest telegraph office which is open for onward transmission, and an inland telegram can similarly be dictated from any public telephone call office or kiosk.
§ Sir F. NELSONIs my Noble Friend aware that on Bank Holiday I was unable to send either an inland or a foreign telegram, and will he look into the matter?
§ Viscount WOLMERYes, if my hon. Friend will kindly give me particulars.
§ Colonel DAYIs it not a fact that someone is always on duty at telegraph offices on Bank Holidays, and cannot arrangements be made for despatching telegrams?
§ Viscount WOLMERAs I have endeavoured to explain, it has been arranged to do it by telephone.
