§ Sir J. GILMOURNo small holdings have been constituted by the Board of Agriculture for Scotland in the County of Lanark during the period specified by the hon. Member. With a view to meeting the claims of suitable applicants in the county schemes of settlement have been proposed but were not found practicable for various reasons, among which I might mention the risk of damage through subsidence caused by mineral workings. The claims of Lanarkshire applicants are being taken into consideration in the selection of holders for settlement on schemes in other districts and 36 of them have been settled on schemes in adjoining counties during the period mentioned in the question.
