HC Deb 28 March 1927 vol 204 cc846-7
26. Sir H. BRITTAIN

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Overseas Trade Department what attention is being paid by his Department to the development of our trade with Italy; and whether any increase of trade has been effected during the past two years?

Sir B. CHADWICK

The Department of Overseas Trade constantly watches the development of trade with Italy, and gives assistance to all British traders who have recourse to its services. Moreover, the Department has erected a permanent pavilion at the Milan Samples Fair as a centre of British commercial propaganda. As regards the development of British export trade to Italy, the figures for 1925 6how an increase of over £1,000,000 compared with 1924. The figures for 1926 are not comparable with those of previous years, owing to the prolonged industrial stoppage in this country.

Mr. REMER

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that there is considerable dissatisfaction among British traders that persons of Italian nationality are appointed to act as British representatives, and will he take steps so that British trade shall be assisted?

Sir B. CHADWICK

Yes, Sir.
