HC Deb 28 March 1927 vol 204 c833
1. Lieut.-Colonel HOWARD-BURY

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether any Soviet agents or propagandists have been arrested in India this year?

The UNDER-SECRETARY of STATE for INDIA (Earl Winterton)

My hon. and gallant friend has on doubt seen in the Press references to the arrest in Calcutta in January, and to the subsequent conviction in Bombay, of a certain George Allison, who is well known in this country as a Communist. He was arrested and convicted on charges of using a forged passport, of counterfeiting the seal and stamp of the Foreign Office, and of having entered India in contravention of the Indian Passport Regulations.

Lieut. Colonel HOWARD-BURY

Is my Noble Friend satisfied that the Indian authorities take every step possible to prevent this propaganda?

Earl WINTERTON

Yes, Sir, I am satisfied. This particular man was prosecuted solely for the offences to which I have referred in my answer.
