HC Deb 14 March 1927 vol 203 cc1637-8
38. Mr. BUXTON

asked the Minister of Agriculture the number of cows slaughtered under the Tuberculosis Order, 1925, since the Order came into force; and the amount spent in compensation?

Mr. GUINNESS

From 1st September, 1925, to 31st December, 1926, 23,369 cows were slaughtered by local authorities under the Tuberculosis Order, 1925, for which compensation amounting to £90,184 was paid.

Mr. BUXTON

Does the right hon. Gentleman think that the degree of inspection is adequate, considering the large amount expended?

Mr. GUINNESS

Considering that these are the figures for only 15 months, I think that this is a very good start.

Captain CROOKSHANK

Has my right hon. Friend's attention been called to circulars issued by the Town Clerk of Glasgow on the subject of tuberculous meat?

Mr. GUINNESS

Perhaps my hon. and gallant Friend will let me see them.

Brigadier-General CLIFTON BROWN

Does my right hon. Friend not think that a perfectly efficient way of dealing with tuberculous milk, and the safest thing to do, is for the consumer to buy British milk?
