HC Deb 14 March 1927 vol 203 c1623
23. Colonel WEDGWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, when the Assistant District Commissioners are relieved of the labour of assessing crops to tithe, he contemplates using them, as in South Africa, for the administrative and magisterial duties of their districts?

Mr. AMERY

I understand that this question is intended to refer to Palestine. Sonic of the officers referred to exercise magisterial powers in their districts, and I have suggested to the High Commissioner for Palestine that, should the system of annual assessment of tithe be abolished, it should be possible to make more extended use of these administrative officers for magisterial duties.
