asked the Home Secretary whether there is any official record of the number of shop premises in England and Wales; and, if so, the number of such premises?


According to the census taken in 1921, there were then in England and Wales approximately 614,579 shops, of which 463,751 were in buildings containing dwellings. These figures are given on page 82 of the "General Tables" published in 1925. I have no later figures.
