HC Deb 03 March 1927 vol 203 cc561-2
64. Mr. BETHEL

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will consider the desirability of taxing the promoters of cross-word puzzles either by a percentage tax on receipts or by making a charge for licence, or both, similar to the tax on betting?

Mr. CHURCHILL

My hon. Friend's suggestion has been noted, but that does riot imply that it will be acted upon.

Colonel DAY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that 13,000,000 letters dealing with cross-word puzzles are sent annually through the post?

Mr. CHURCHILL

I am not particularly familiar with the figures.

Mr. BETHEL

Would not the result of this be the same as the Betting Duty?
