HC Deb 20 June 1927 vol 207 c1468
19. Sir ROBERT THOMAS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the recent reports of large German immigration into Tanganyika, it is possible further to encourage and assist British settlement in that territory?

Mr. AMERY

Information which I have received from the Territory indicates that the reports to which my hon. Friend refers are much exaggerated. The number of German traders, settlers and visitors, including women and children, who landed in Tanganyika Territory between 1st January, 1926, and 31st, March, 1927, was 453. It is the policy of His Majesty's Government to afford British enterprise in the Territory all possible assistance and every encouragement consistent with the terms of the Mandate.
