HC Deb 13 June 1927 vol 207 c674
37. Mr. R. MORRISON

asked the Minister of Transport (1) the number of motor cars registered for the first four months of the present year, and similar figures for the same period last year and in 1914;

(2) the number of commercial motor vehicles which have been registered up to the last available date this year, and similar figures for the same period last year and in 1914?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)

As the reply involves the quotation of a number of figures, I propose, with the hon. Member's consent, to circulate it with the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

Class of vehicle. Number of licences current on 28th February.
1926. 1927.
1. Private cars (i.e., cars taxed on horsepower) 498,188 572,444
2. Goods carrying vehicles 232,482 258,636
3. Hackney vehicles 77,424 73,560
4. Tractor vehicles 2,568 2,959

Corresponding figures are not available for the year 1914, but the number of licences issued in the financial year 1913–14 for private cars was 132,015 and for hackney vehicles 51,167. Commercial goods vehicles were not licensed in 1914, and I have no information as to the number registered in that year.
