HC Deb 28 July 1927 vol 209 cc1456-7
62. Commander WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Labour how many cases have been brought to his notice of trade unionists in the Torquay area who were fined by their unions for working during the general strike; in how many cases have these fines been remitted; and when was the last case settled?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Eight cases of the kind have been reported to me, in all of which action initiated by my Department has resulted in the fines being remitted. I received an intimation two days ago that the last case had been settled.

Commander WILLIAMS

Are we to understand that in one case, the fine has been outstanding for nearly a year?

Sir A. STEEL-MAITLAND

Yes, in the last case it was outstanding for a considerable time, but it has now been settled.
