HC Deb 25 July 1927 vol 209 cc841-2
52. Mr. BROCKLEBANK

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will make arrangements for postal business to be transacted in the Sherwood district of Nottingham on Thursday afternoons?

The ASSISTANT POSTMASTER-GENERAL (Viscount Wolmer)

I understand that Thursday is early closing day at Sherwood and in accordance with Post Office practice throughout the country the scale payment sub-office is closed for postal business, though open for the receipt of telegrams. My right hon. Friend regrets that he does not feel able to treat Sherwood exceptionally in this matter.

Mr. BROCKLEBANK

Is the Noble Lord aware that this very growing district has to-day no greater facilities than it had when it was a village 20 years ago?

Viscount WOLMER

We will keep constantly before our minds the possibility of having a new scale payment post office.

Mr. E. BROWN

Cannot the Noble Lord find a new Robin Hood?

Mr. W. THORNE

Is there no possibility of arranging for the post office to be away from the shop, so that the post office can be kept open on Thursday afternoons?

Viscount WOLMER

We cannot keep the post office open without having someone behind the counter to attend to it. As my hon. Friend knows quite well, the Early Closing Act was passed in the interest of those who serve behind the counter, and the Post Office has done its best to fall into line in this matter, in the interest of its employés.
