HC Deb 25 July 1927 vol 209 cc823-4
13. Mr. LANSBURY

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether any political emigrants from Syria have recently been expelled, or are about to be expelled, from Palestine; and, if so, how many and upon what grounds?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I presume that the question relates to the Druze refugees in Trans-Jordan. My most recent information is that the French authorities in Syria have offered a general amnesty and safe conduct home to all these refugees with certain specified exceptions. Seven hundred and fourteen persons have taken advantage of this offer, and have been repatriated. The others have been ordered to leave Trans-Jordan, except for some 100 persons who have been permitted to remain.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Are the persons exempted from amnesty to be allowed to remain under our protection?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I should like to have notice of that question.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Surely the right hon. Member knows whether we are going to deport people who are not amnestied?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

The question of certain specified individuals and whether they are to be permitted to remain in Trans-Jordania or to have to leave for Egypt, Palestine or elsewhere is a point about which, if that is the hon. and gallant Member's supplementary question, I must ask for notice.
