HC Deb 25 July 1927 vol 209 c822
10. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the production of brandy in Cyprus; and what proportion thereof is exported?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

The figures for brandy exported from Cyprus for the years 1924, 1925 and 1926 are, respectively, 4,203, 4,278 and 2,054 gallons. Reliable figures showing the total production of brandy in Cyprus are not obtainable, as local merchants do not distinguish in their books between the different types of spirits produced. The following figures are rough estimates:

Gallons.
1924 150,000
1925 150,000
1926 100,000

Colonel DAY

Can the right hon. Gentleman say where the majority of this brandy was exported to?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I think it goes to Greece and to Near Eastern countries, Syria and the like, and some comes to this country.

Colonel DAY

Is there very much of it that goes to America?
