asked the Under-Secretary of State for India the book value of the assets of the Indian State railways; and the debt at present out standing in respect of these railways?

The total capital at charge of Indian State Railways, including those worked by companies, on the 31st March, 1926, the latest date up to which actual figures are available, was in round figures Rs.614½ crores. The Government debt outstanding in respect of these railways at the same date, which is taken as including Rs.14 crores provided from Revenue, was Rs.567½ crores, and the capital outlay from funds contributed by companies and Indian States was Rs.47 crores.
