HC Deb 20 July 1927 vol 209 cc394-5
33. Mr. WESTWOOD

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the number of untrained teachers now teaching in rate and state-aided schools in Scotland, with the number employed within the area of the respective education authorities?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I regret that I am unable to furnish the figures asked for. In the collection of statistics, the Scottish Education Department no longer distinguish between those certificated teachers who are trained and those who have not passed through a training college, the latter being merely the remnant of an old class which is rapidly disappearing from the schools. The latest figures available are for the year 1919–20, when, of a total of 20,695 certificated teachers, 3,725 were untrained. I am sending the hon. Member the detailed figures arranged under education areas.

Mr. WESTWOOD

Are we to understand that the education authorities are not now engaging any new untrained teachers?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I could not answer that question without notice.
