HC Deb 20 July 1927 vol 209 c383
11. Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether he will consider granting uniform allowances at the rate of £12 10s. per annum to a warrant officer, £15 per annum to a commissioned officer from warrant rank, and £20 per annum to a lieutenant, seeing that the cost of uniforms still remains about double that of pre-War?

Lieut.-Colonel HEADLAM

The present allowances, the existing rates of which were fixed after the War, are intended to be in aid of the initial expenses incurred by officers on promotion to warrant rank and to the equivalent rank of Lieutenant, any expenses of maintenance being regarded as a responsibility of the officers themselves. This arrangement is common to all classes of officers and no reason is seen for altering it.
