§ 63. Mr. THURTLEasked the Minister of Transport if he is prepared to introduce legislation with a view to obtaining for the public improved facilities for rail- 31 way travel on Sundays, especially in connection with short journeys, in view of the fact that Sunday is becoming the chief day of recreation for many people?
§ Colonel ASHLEYUnder the existing law railway companies are under a general obligation to afford reasonable services and facilities, and I do not contemplate the introduction of legislation dealing specially with the facilities to be afforded on Sundays.
§ Mr. THURTLEIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that, since a more rational view has been taken of the observance of Sunday, there has been a public demand for a better railway service on Sundays?
§ Colonel ASHLEYIf the railway companies do not afford reasonable facilities, it is open to anyone to apply to the Railway and Canal Commission to see that such facilities are granted.
§ Mr. THURTLEWould the right hon. Gentleman define what he means by "reasonable"?
§ Colonel ASHLEYThat is a matter for the Tribunal, not for myself.
§ Mr. J. H. THOMASWould not there be reasonable facilities if there were empty seats on Sundays now?
