HC Deb 13 July 1927 vol 208 cc2117-8
7. Mr. GEOFFREY PETO

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the Government has reached a decision on the question of the reoccupation of Hankow; and what the decision is and on what grounds it is based?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

The decision of His Majesty's Government remains as stated on the 9th May in my reply to the hon. and gallant Member for Central Hull (Lieut.-Commander Kenworthy), to which I would refer my hon. Friend.

Mr. PETO

May I ask whether the action or inaction of the Government is based on the expert advice of the naval, military and mercantile community in China?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

His Majesty's Government take full responsibility for their own decisions, and they consult such people and take such advice as they think expedient in the circumstances.

8. Mr. LOOKER

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the protective forces now at Hankow will be maintained there throughout the winter months?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

It is impossible to say what arrangements may be necessary for the protection of British interests at Hankow four months ahead, but, provided circumstances remain as at present, it is intended to maintain a substantial force there throughout the winter.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

Is it not true that in Hankow conditions are very much better and that the ordinary conditions of living are being restored?

Sir A. CHAMBERLAIN

I could not say that. My information is that the situation is still unstable and disturbed.
