HC Deb 23 February 1927 vol 202 cc1763-4
72. Mr. RAMSDEN

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether he is aware that the Government of Uganda have recently purchased a quantity of blankets from Germany; and whether, in view of the necessity for fostering British trade, he will recommend that in the future British-made goods are bought?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

I have no information as to this purchase.

Mr. RAMSDEN

Will the hon. Member obtain information on the subject?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

We have made inquiries from the Crown Agents, who purchase practically everything bought outside Uganda, and they can trace no evidence of this transaction.

Mr. RAMSDEN

Will the hon. Member ask in the Colony itself whether this purchase has been made?

Mr. ORMSBY-GORE

We will ascertain, but I would point out that the amount that the local Government may buy inside its own borders is very small.
