HC Deb 21 February 1927 vol 202 cc1398-9
53. Mr. GILLETT

asked the Minister of Health what are the scales of relief paid to the able-bodied unemployed by the boards of guardians in the Metropolitan area?

Sir K. WOOD

The information desired by the hon. Member could only be obtained by calling upon the several boards of guardians to make a special return, and the application of such scales as are in existence is subject to so many qualifications, depending on the practice of the particular board of guardians, that any simple return would be rather misleading than useful.

Mr. GROVES

Is the Department prepared to take action where it discovers that the rate of relief for able-bodied unemployed men is beyond the point of what they call subsistence?

Sir K. WOOD

That is an entirely different matter.
