HC Deb 21 February 1927 vol 202 c1407
70. Colonel DAY

asked the Minister of Transport if he is aware of the inconvenience suffered by long-distance motor travellers owing to the material differences that exist in the traffic regulations in different parts of the country; and whether his Department mill consider taking such action as will result in the regularisation of traffic laws on a line with those operating in the Metropolis?

The MINISTER of TRANSPORT (Colonel Ashley)

I fully appreciate the desirability of uniformity in traffic laws and regulations throughout the country, as far as is practicable. The matter has been engaging my attention in connection with the Bill for the regulation of road traffic.

Colonel DAY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that the signals one gets from policemen in different parts of the country are all different, and will he take that into consideration?

Colonel ASHLEY

The police are human, like other people, and probably mean the same thing, but do it in a different way.

Colonel DAY

Will the right hon. Gentleman take into consideration that what is in the motorist's mind is not exactly what is in the policeman's mind, and will he have some system of regularity so that the motorists can know exactly?
