asked the Minister of Labour whether there is now any obstacle in the way of ratification by the British Government of the Washington Hours of Work Convention; and whether it will be ratified without delay?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of LABOUR (Mr. Betterton)

This matter is under consideration, and I am not yet in a position to make any statement upon it.

Mr. RHYS DAVIES

Will the Government take into account the fact that in the last few days the French Government have decided to put this Convention into operation, provided that the British Government also do so?

Mr. BETTERTON

Every relevant circumstance will be taken into consideration.

Mr. B. SMITH

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that the German Government have also considered it, and that on two occasions he has promised to consider it?

Mr. BETTERTON

Yes, I am aware of that, and this Government is considering it also.
