HC Deb 10 February 1927 vol 202 c268
17. Mr. HANNON

asked the Minister of Health whether he can state to the latest date for which figures are available the number of applications which has reached his Department for widows' pensions and children s allowances under the Contributory Pensions Act; the number of claims embodied in such applications which have been allowed and the number refused; and If he will give a comparison of these figures with the estimates submitted to the House when the Act was first presented?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

As the answer involves a number of figures, I will, with the hon. Member's permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT.

Following is the answer:

As regards the first and second parts of the question, on the latest figures available for England, Scotland and Wales, the position is as follows:

Widows' Pensions. Orphans' Pensions.
Number of Applications 236,630 16,378
Number of Awards 181,485 12,025
Number of children included in these Awards 274,400 15,620
Number of Rejections 52,228 4,074
As regards the last part of the question, the estimates submitted when the Act was first presented showed the number of beneficiaries at the middle (i.e., 30th September) of financial years. As the above figures show the position on the 3rd instant, I am afraid that the suggested comparison cannot be made.
