§ 39. Mr. HANNONasked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, seeing that the staff of the Board of Inland Revenue is 1,000 less to-day than in 1922, that the revenue to be collected has largely increased, and that the staff are thereby obliged to perform an undue amount of overtime work, he will make an adequate increase in the strength of the staff?
§ The FINANCIAL SECRETARY to the TREASURY (Mr. Ronald McNeill)My hon. Friend is misinformed as to the receipt of inland Revenue, which has decreased since 1922. The working of overtime has also diminished and will by degrees, it is hoped, be further reduced.
§ Mr. HANNONCan the right lion. Gentleman say whether there is any loss of revenue due to this diminution of staff?
§ Mr. McNEILLI cannot answer that offhand.
§ Sir JOSEPH NALLIs it not a fact that the cost of the Customs and Excise and Inland Revenue Departments has been considerably increased?
§ Mr. McNEILLI must have notice of that question.
