HC Deb 26 April 1927 vol 205 c659
36. Sir F. WISE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the official estimate of the percentage of direct to indirect taxes according to the new Budget?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The proportions are as follow: Direct taxes, 63.44 per cent. Indirect taxes, 36.56 per cent., but of this figure Sumptuary Taxes account for 31.58 per cent. These include, among other things, the shortening of the brewers' credits.

Mr. A. V. ALEXANDER

Does the right hon. Gentleman's estimate include Stamp Duties or Motor Vehicle Duties?

Mr. CHURCHILL

It does not include Stamp Duties, but it includes the McKenna Duties—not the Motor Vehicle Duties which are paid for the load Fund.

Mr. SNOWDEN

Are the Stamp Duties included under the heading of direct taxation?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Yes, Sir.
