HC Deb 13 April 1927 vol 205 c348
14. Sir BERTRAM FALLE

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty whether, in the last and all future entries for naval cadets in Dartmouth Royal Naval College, the marks obtained in the educational examination by each of the candidates may be published, showing those who are accepted for entry, instead of the system hitherto adopted of only publishing a list in alphabetical order of those who have been passed and accepted, observing that it would be to the satisfaction of candidates and their parents if their relative positions and marks in this final examination were obtainable from the Admiralty?

The FIRST LORD of the ADMIRALTY (Mr. Bridgman)

One of the principal features of the present system of entry into the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, is the elimination of competition in the written educational examination, which is governed by a qualifying standard only. The adoption of my hon. Friend's suggestion would inevitably have the effect of introducing that element of competition which it has been sought to avoid.
