HC Deb 12 April 1927 vol 205 c184
53. Mr. SHORT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the number of persons paying Income Tax during 1924–25 and 1925–26, respectively?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The numbers of liable persons paying tax in the years in question are estimated at 2,400,000 for the year 1924–25 and 2,300,000 for the year 1925–26.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Does that disclose the number of people of the rentier class whose tax is deducted at the source?

Mr. SHORT

Does the right hon. Gentleman mean that they actually pay Income Tax?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Yes, Sir.
