HC Deb 07 April 1927 vol 204 cc2248-9
27. Mr. ALLEN PARKINSON

asked the Minister of Health if the advertisement issued by the Chapel-en-le-Frith Rural District Council for a fully qualified, whole-time sanitary inspector, having previous experience of rural sanitary work and a practical knowledge of building construction, at a salary of £190 per annum, rising by £10 to £220 per annum, was first submitted to him for his sanction in accordance with Article 8 of the Sanitary Officer Order, 1926; and whether this salary is regarded by his Department as adequate to secure and retain the services of a qualified experienced sanitary inspector?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The salary originally proposed by the Council for this appointment was £180, rising by four annual increments of £5 to £200, but they were requested by me to reconsider the matter. I have assented to the issue of an advertisement offering the terms stated in the question, and I am awaiting the result of the advertisement.

46. Mr. GRIFFITHS

asked the Minister of Health if he is aware of the terms of the advertisement issued by the borough of Devizes asking for applications for the appointment of a whole-time qualified sanitary inspector at a salary of £150 per annum; whether he considers this adequate; and, if not, what action he proposes to take with the authority concerned?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The reply to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. I propose to ask the Council to reconsider the proposed salary.

40. Lieut.-Colonel WATTS-MORGAN (for Mr. G. HALL)

asked the Minister of Health if his attention has been drawn to an advertisement issued by the Bedwelty urban district council inviting applications for the appointment of a whole-time qualified sanitary inspector at a salary of £180 per annum, rising by annual increments of £10 to £220 per annum; whether he approved of the terms of the advertisement in accordance with Article 8 of the Sanitary Officers Order, 1926; and whether he considers it an adequate salary to secure and retain the services of a properly qualified officer?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

Yes, Sir. This officer is not to be the principal sanitary inspector of the district, and I have seen no reason to withhold approval of the terms of the advertisement.
