Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe amount raised by rates in England and Wales 2251 during the year ended 31st March, 1926, was, approximately, £147,500,000, and the amount of Exchequer grants to local authorities in the same year was, approximately, £84,200,000. The corresponding figures for the year ended 31st March, 1914, were £71,276,158 from rates and £22,617,246 from grants. The term Exchequer grants is taken to include, in addition to voted moneys, sums paid out of the Local Taxation Account and out of the Road Improvement Fund or the Road Fund.
