asked the Minister of Health the amount raised by rates in England and Wales during the latest year for which the figures are available, and the total Exchequer contribution to local authorities for the same year and, for comparison, the corresponding figures for the year ended 31st March, 1914?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

The amount raised by rates in England and Wales during the year ended 31st March, 1926, was, approximately, £147,500,000, and the amount of Exchequer grants to local authorities in the same year was, approximately, £84,200,000. The corresponding figures for the year ended 31st March, 1914, were £71,276,158 from rates and £22,617,246 from grants. The term Exchequer grants is taken to include, in addition to voted moneys, sums paid out of the Local Taxation Account and out of the Road Improvement Fund or the Road Fund.
