58. Colonel WOODCOCK

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury if he can give an approximate figure showing the total number of men and women of all grades who are employed in any capacity whatever in the Civil Service and other Government services?

I am sending my hon. and gallant Friend a copy of the quarterly statement as to the non-industrial staffs of Government Departments on 1st January, 1927, which has been presented to Parliament as a Command Paper. The number of industrial staffs of Government Departments on the same date was 122,894. The above does not include persons employed abroad. The personnel of the Army, Navy and Air Force, at or about the same date, was as follows:

Army 147,979
Navy 101,434
Air Force 29,300
