§ 71. Mr. LOOKERasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is in a position to make any statement as to the position of matters at Hankow?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINThe latest reports indicate that the situation at Hankow is easier, but that a further crisis is anticipated. Steps are being taken to reduce the British community to a minimum, and the United States authorities are evacuating their nationals as rapidly as possible.
§ Sir CLEMENT KINLOCH-COOKEIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that Japanese gunboats are now bombarding Hankow, and can he say what will happen in the event of those shells damaging the property of British nationals?
§ Sir A. CHAMBERLAINNo, Sir, I am not aware of the facts as stated by my hon. Friend, though I understand that the Japanese, in consequence of an attack on the Japanese concession, did have to fire, not only with rifle fire, but, I think, with machine guns.
