HC Deb 26 October 1926 vol 199 cc693-4
Sir FRANK MEYER

(by Private Notice) asked the Secretary for Mines whether in view of the increased production of British coal that is now taking place he is prepared to reconsider his decision with reference to a supply of British coal for the ports of Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft, and enable the Herring Fishing Industry to be carried on during the next two months.

Colonel LANE FOX

I regret that it has not yet been found possible, in view of the limited supplies of British coal, and the facilities for fishing vessels to bunker abroad, to release British coal for this purpose. But the matter comes under review every week, and I will relax the restriction as soon as circumstances justify it.

Mr. MACQUISTEN

Will the right hon. Gentleman also take into consideration the fact that the Argyllshire pits produce sufficient coal for the needs of the Argyllshire people, and why is he taking those supplies away to other areas?

Colonel LANE FOX

I am trying to do justice to Scotland as well as to England.
