§ 29. Mr. R. MORRISONasked the Minister of Transport whether he has considered the question of the inadequate lighting of arterial roads; and whether any experiments in highway illumination are being carried out by the Ministry?
§ Colonel ASHLEYAs the hon. Member is aware, the lighting of highways is a matter for the local authorities concerned, and it may be hoped that when financial conditions improve, a higher standard of lighting will be adopted by the less advanced authorities. I am not at present conducting experiments in highway illumination, nor am I aware that I have any powers to do so.
§ Mr. MORRISONHas the right hon. Gentleman considered whether the Roads Improvement Act which was passed last year empowers him to make the experiment in lighting arterial roads?
§ Colonel ASHLEYI am advised that it does not.
