HC Deb 04 May 1926 vol 195 cc194-5
24. Mr. B. PETO

asked the Minister of Transport whether his attention has been caned to the fact that on the main west road to Exeter there are level crossings at Sunningdale, Blackwater, and Andover, and on the Bath Road a level crossing at Colnbrook; and whether, in view of the heavy traffic on these roads, he proposes to take steps to get these level crossings abolished?

Colonel ASHLEY

I am acquainted with these four level crossings and I am glad to say that in the case of two of these localities, namely, Blackwater and Colnbrook, the responsible highway authorities are proceeding, with assistance from the Road Fund, to provide bridges. Having regard to the very large number of level crossings in the 'United Kingdom the process of elimination must necessarily be a slow one, and I cannot say how soon the highway authorities concerned will be disposed to prepare schemes for providing bridges at Sunningdale and Andover.

Mr. PETO

Will the right hon. Gentleman give special attention to the few cases of level crossings on the main arterial roads?

Colonel ASHLEY

We are doing so.
