HC Deb 30 March 1926 vol 193 cc1813-4
8. Colonel DAY

asked the President of the Board of Trade if his attention has been drawn to the prevailing high retail prices of meat; and will the attention of the Food Council be drawn to this matter?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

The Food Council are already inquiring into retail meat prices.

Colonel DAY

Is it not the fact that the Food Council have already expressed the opinion that the price of meat should be made 2d. or 3d. a pound cheaper?

Mr. PALING

If nothing be done to bring down meat prices to the level suggested by the Food Council, is it the-intention of the right hon. Gentleman to give further powers to the Council in order to compel this to be done?

Sir P. CUNLIFFE-LISTER

It really would be impossible for me to give an answer to that purely hypothetical question. I have not received any Report from the Food Council on the subject.
