HC Deb 23 March 1926 vol 193 cc1035-6
88. Mr. HARLAND

asked the Minister of Health whether he is aware of the prevalence in this country of the disease known as baker's itch; whether such disease is notifiable; and whether he has any evidence showing that this disease is due to the modern use of chemicals in the bleaching of flour?

Sir K. WOOD

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. This disease, which is not notifiable, was investigated by the Medical Department of the Ministry of Health in 1922, and these investigations did not disclose any reasons why it should be made notifiable. The answer to the last part of the question is in the negative.

Sir F. HALL

Is this disease regarded as contagious or infectious?

Sir K. WOOD

I have not been asked that question. It is not on the Paper.

Sir F. HALL

If this disease is on the increase, surely the Minister ought to be—[HON. MEMBERS: "Order! order!"]

Mr. HARLAND

Is the hon. Gentleman aware that this disease has been contracted in some cases by travellers handling samples?

Sir K. WOOD

That may very well be so.

Sir F. HALL

If this disease is on the increase, surely it ought to be notifiable?
