Sir DAVISONthe Prime Minister whether his attention has been called to the imminent encroachment on the amenities of the South Downs by speculative building syndicates; and whether the Government propose to take any action to preserve the downs for the benefit of the public?
PRIME MINISTER (Mr. Bald-win)Measures are already being taken by a number of local authorities for preserving the amenities in the South Downs, and the Minister of Health is encouraging action. The First Commissioner of Works has also scheduled a number of earth works and tumuli on the Downs for preservation as ancient monuments.
