HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 cc229-30
34. Mr. BARCLAY-HARVEY

asked the Minister of Transport if, having in view the admitted success of the Southern Railway electrification scheme, he will press other railway companies to proceed with electrification schemes in other areas where conditions are reasonably similar, and where in consequence similar successful results might be accepted?

The PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY to the MINISTRY of TRANSPORT (Lieut.-Colonel Moore-Brabazon)

As the railway companies are aware, I should be very glad to sea an extension of electrical traction on railways where this could be done with advantage to the public, and where the results would be likely to justify the expenditure involved. It must, however, necessarily rest with the companies to satisfy themselves, before embarking on any such scheme, that it is likely to he satisfactory from every point of view.

Mr. H. WILLIAMS

Does this apply to short-distance electrification, or to long-distance electrification

Lieut.-Colonel MOORE-BRABAZON

It applies to suburban traffic.
