HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 c223
19. Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

asked the Secretary of State for War what is the annual cost of the mounted sentries at the Horse Guards in Whitehall?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

The mounted sentries form an integral part of the establishments to which they belong, and I regret that it is not possible to isolate and assess a separate figure for the cost of these particular duties.

Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHY

If these sentries were either abolished or replaced by foot sentries, would there not be a saving, owing to the horses being available for other services?

Sir L. WORTHINGTON-EVANS

No, Sir: it would only rest the horses, and would not save the expense of their keep.

Mr. ERSKINE

Would it not conduce to economy to have dummy sentries?
