HC Deb 16 March 1926 vol 193 c248
62. Mr. H. WILLIAMS

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the basis of valuation for Customs purposes of the cinematograph films imported into this country; and whether this valuation is such as to ensure that duty is paid on a value equal to that which is paid by importers for the right to show the imported films in this country?

Mr. McNEILL

My hon. Friend is under a misapprehension: the duty on cinematograph films is not charged on an ad valorembasis, but is a specific duty at the rate of 5d. per linear foot in the case of negatives and 1d. per linear foot in the ease of positives.

65. Sir F. MEYER

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that a considerable revenue might be obtained by the taxation of foreign films on their exhibition value, based on the aggregate value of the-hiring fees charged for them in this country: and is he prepared to consider a tax of this nature.

Mr. McNEILL

As he informed the hon. and gallant Member for Norwich on the 25th February, the whole subject is receiving the attention of my right hon. Friend.

Colonel DAY

Is the right hon. Gentleman aware that in one case, in one form or another, over £250,000 went to America for hiring fee?

Mr. McNEILL

I am not aware of that.
