§ 62. Mr. H. WILLIAMSasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the basis of valuation for Customs purposes of the cinematograph films imported into this country; and whether this valuation is such as to ensure that duty is paid on a value equal to that which is paid by importers for the right to show the imported films in this country?
§ Mr. McNEILLMy hon. Friend is under a misapprehension: the duty on cinematograph films is not charged on an ad valorembasis, but is a specific duty at the rate of 5d. per linear foot in the case of negatives and 1d. per linear foot in the ease of positives.
§ 65. Sir F. MEYERasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that a considerable revenue might be obtained by the taxation of foreign films on their exhibition value, based on the aggregate value of the-hiring fees charged for them in this country: and is he prepared to consider a tax of this nature.
§ Mr. McNEILLAs he informed the hon. and gallant Member for Norwich on the 25th February, the whole subject is receiving the attention of my right hon. Friend.
§ Colonel DAYIs the right hon. Gentleman aware that in one case, in one form or another, over £250,000 went to America for hiring fee?
§ Mr. McNEILLI am not aware of that.
