HC Deb 15 March 1926 vol 193 c40
72. Mr. HAYES

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the representations made by His Majesty's Government to the Italian Government, respecting the Englishman, William Ellison, who has been sentenced by a Florence tribunal to a period of imprisonment, for an offence against Italian law, have been finally considered; and, if so, with what result?

Mr. LOCKER-LAMPSON

As soon as the result of Mr. Ellison's appeal was known, His Majesty's Ambassador brought the matter to Signor Mussolini's attention, and I am glad to be able to say that Signor Mussolini at once, of his own initiative, submitted to the King of Italy a pardon for Mr. Ellison. The decree granting him a free pardon, but requiring him to leave Italy, was signed on the 11th instant.
