HC Deb 15 March 1926 vol 193 cc2-3
5. Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India whether his attention has been drawn to the evidence given before the Skeen Committee by Burman commissioned officers; and whether it is the intention of the Government of India to promote and encourage the inclusion of educated Burmans in the enlistment for the Burman Rifles?

Earl WINTERTON

I have so far seen only Press reports of the evidence. Burmans can compete for commissions in the Indian Army on the same footing as Indians. The question of enlistment would appear to be outside the scope of the committee to which my hon. Friend refers.

Mr. WARDLAW-MILNE

Is the Noble Lord aware that the Committee have already dealt with this matter?

Earl WINTERTON

Yes, but the point is that the Committee have not yet reported, and until they do report, I do not think any useful purpose could be served by my saying anything.
