HC Deb 11 March 1926 vol 192 cc2591-2
122. Mr. HORE-BELISHA

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury the amount of money raised for war loan certificates by the formation of war savings associations; the cost per annum of the special external staff, commissioners and assistant commissioners, of the War Savings Committee who are responsible for pushing the formation of these associations; and the cost per certificate disposed of by their efforts?

Mr. McNEILL

It is not possible to state what proportion of the total sum of £595,000,000 raised by savings certificates has been subscribed through the medium of savings associations. The present annual cost of the external staff of the National Savings Committee, including travelling and office expenses, is approximately £36,000. I am satisfied that the work of these officers, which is by no means confined to the formation of associations, greatly contributes to the encouragement of thrift throughout the country.
