HC Deb 20 July 1926 vol 198 c1035
38. Commander BELLAIRS

asked the Postmaster-General whether, in view of the extra work and confusion which exists in London and other great cities through the same or very similar names being used for the streets, he has undertaken any negotiations with the authorities on the subject of renaming the streets?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

So far as the County of London is concerned, there has been for many years a satisfactory measure of co-operation between the London County Council and the Post Office, and the general adoption by the public of the practice of including the delivery office number as well as the district initial in the address of London letters has materially reduced the risk of confusion arising from the repetition of street names. I have no reason to suppose that similar co-operation does not exist in the large provincial cities, but, if my hon. and gallant Friend will give the name of any city which he has particularly in mind, I will make inquiries and let him know the result.
