HC Deb 20 July 1926 vol 198 cc1043-4
64 and 65. Mr. HAYDN JONES

asked the Minister of Labour (1) whether he is aware that more than 50 women workers employed at the Penrhyndendraeth Powder Factory have been thrown out of employment in consequence of the present industrial conditions, and that a promise of reinstatement has been made as soon as such conditions allow; that a number or these workers applied for and were refused unemployment benefit on the ground that they were not genuinely seeking work, while others under exactly similar conditions are being paid benefit; and whether, under the circumstances, he will issue instructions that benefit be paid to those women workers who hitherto have received no benefit;

(2), whether he is aware that Miss Emily Elizabeth Owen, of Ty Newydd, Penrhyndendraeth, an insured person thrown out of work form the Penrhyndendraeth powder factory owing to the existing industrial conditions, was refused unemployment benefit on the grounds of not genuinely seeking employment; that she is a single person residing with relatives; that she agreed to accept domestic service, which has not yet been offered her; and that her father, with whom she resides, is unemployed and his only means of subsistence is unemployment benefit; and whether, under the circumstances, he will direct that benefit be paid forthwith?

Major HENNESSY

I have been asked to reply. The Minister has had an interim report, but in the meantime he has received from the hon. Member a letter which necessitates further inquiry. The Minister will communicate the result to the hon. Member as soon as possible.
