Colonel VAUGHAN - MORGANasked the Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, if he will state under what legal authority it is proposed to appropriate a strip of Kensington Gardens for the widening of Kensington Road, in view of Section 19 of the Development and Road Improvement Funds Act, 1909, which provides that no land forming part of any common, open space, or allotment shall be taken for road purposes, without the sanction of Parliament, unless an adequate area of land is given by way of compensation?
§ Major BARNSTON (for the FIRST COMMISSIONER OF WORKS)Section 19 of the Act has reference to orders made by the Development Commissioners for the compulsory acquisition of land. It does not apply to the case in question where the strip of land was voluntarily surrendered in order to assist in a desirable road-widening scheme.

DAVISONCan the hon. and gallant Member assure the House that advantage will be taken of this public improvement to straighten out the rather mean diagonal ending to the Broad Walk in Kensington Gardens, so that it may be straight and More suitable for the fine thoroughfare it was meant to be?
